Golden
Retriever Championship Show NSW - May 2005
Dear Members,
Thank you so much for the invitation to judge The May 2005 Golden Retriever Club
of NSW Championship Show. Thanks to Club President Bruce McLean for his
friendliness and helpfulness when getting me to and from the airport and to the
show grounds on the morning of the show. On my arrival at the motel I was
surprised by a lovely gift of a bottle of wine, fruit, nuts and chocolates.
The hospitality shown to me was as good as I have had anywhere.
Congratulations to the Club members for a delightful show. The ring was super,
the weather almost perfect and the sportsmanship a credit to all.
Thank you to Russell Britten for his patient and very efficient stewarding. Also
thank you for the quiet and unobtrusive way video expert, Les Williams and Club
photographer, Ross Stirton carried out their work during the day. Finally, thank
you to all those members who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make the
show a success. What a wonderful gesture to put on lunch for the members who
gave of their time to assist with the organisation of the 5th National.
Unfortunately, due to overseas arrangements, I was unable to attend what was
reported to be a most incredible event.
At the gathering around of members after judging, I became very aware of the
years of experience which were on the grounds and, clearly, one would have to
live a lot of lifetimes to gain all of the knowledge that was there on that day.
It was so special to have my octogenarian aunt, Shirley Sullivan at ringside
(despite the chance of being reprimanded later for some of my decisions!)
Approximately 10 years ago, Gay Westmore, a valued member of The Golden
Retriever Club of Queensland, undertook the enormous task of documenting all
Goldens ever shown in this country. By careful thought the document was set up
in a way which enabled the reader to determine the number of champions produced
by all kennels as well as the number of champion progeny of all sires and dams.
Whilst the list is not totally exhaustive I believe it to be one of two of the
most informative records of our "Aussie" show dogs up until the mid-1990's. (The
other one, of course, being Patterson's Australia's Golden Heritage.) A copy of
Gay's database has been donated to The Golden Retriever Club of NSW. There are a
number of very modest people who have committed a huge part of their life to
make the breed what it is today and this document is a record of their
achievements for all to see, both now, and in the future.
To highlight the achievement by "Golden people" in this country, I have included
an extract from Elma Stonex's book "The Golden Retriever ". This paragraph was
written within 10 years of Goldens being developed in Australia, and describes
the breed in England after the second world war.
"Many were too big, many had poor bone from improper feeding so that their legs
appeared unlikely to support them, their hindquarters and hocks were weak and
their feet flat and open from insufficient exercise. A rather flat sided
setter-like type seemed to be common, often with narrow skulls and weak
fore-faces, the former threatening a lack of brains and the latter the inability
to carry the smallest of pheasants. These points, with the number of light eyes
which careless breeding had produced, combined to give a wild and foxy look
completely at variance with the sweet and benign expression of a true golden".
This does not even sound like the same breed, where the depth in many of the
classes at the show was so good, a number of dogs were left unplaced, which I am
sure have been, and will be, worthy winners in the future.
When making decisions, foremost in my mind was that a distinction had to be made
between what was inherited and what was created. Overall type, substance,
balance, confirmation, soundness and temperament were all considered in the
decision making process. In addition, it was important to try to judge
positively instead of just fault judging because the lack of faults definitely
doesn't necessarily imply the presence of virtues. On this occasion, however,
because the quality was so high, final decisions did sometimes come down to
individual points.
Judging dogs means interpreting the breed standard. It can therefore be very
subjective. As a result very few judges will judge exactly alike. It would
actually be pretty bad for dog shows if they did. As long as we have dog shows
there is going to be debate on the importance of type versus soundness. Very
often a specialist will judge differently to an all rounder. One of the reasons
for this is that, within our breed, great emphasis is placed on characteristics
such as a dog's melting expression and beautiful temperament. These, of course,
are considered of utmost importance to the purists. An all-rounder often places
more importance on overall soundness. That is not to say that the all-rounder
does not have an important role. They can often add a different slant to things,
which may be being overlooked when the specialists focus on important breed
characteristics. They do say though that the really great dog, can and will win
under all judges.
On the day of the show it was lovely to see the great variation in colour.
Nothing is more beautiful than having a line-up of goldens showing the full
range of colour as set down in our standard, from lightest cream through to
gleaming gold. Very few dogs had an eye colour which would be considered a
serious fault, but the sample of dogs on the day did support the conjecture in
the literature which states that it is often easier to get a darker eye on a
blonder dog. So, should colour be a significant factor in the choice of a puppy
for the show ring? If the ideal aim is to win the coveted Best in Show at the
National under a judge from a country which abides by the English standard,
(which accepts the range of cream to gold equally) all other things being equal,
probably not, except for the reason just stated. At other prestigious shows such
as Royals, judges often judge to the standard to which they are accustomed. The
American standard describes the colour as rich lustrous golden of various
shades. If one believes what is stated above to be true, that the greatest dogs
of all will win under anybody, then there is more chance of having a superstar
if one owns a gold dog with a dark eye. This is not to say that a blond dog
cannot be one of the greats. It just means that, if this is actually the
definition of greatness, and, the choice of Royal judges remains the same, the
probability of greatness will be higher for the dog which has both colour and a
dark eye, because this dog will satisfy both standards. In my opinion, whether
or not colour becomes a factor in the selection process, really comes down to
the exhibitor's ultimate aim or whether he has a personal preference, and, as
long as there are differences of opinion, the range of colour in this country
will always be safe.
Temperaments fell only a fraction short of perfect. Heads generally had broad
skulls and strong muzzles with just a couple found to be a little on the coarse
side. Pigmentation was excellent. Whilst not documented in the standard,
cheekiness can tend to prevent the classically soft look and there was a certain
amount of variation in this regard. There were no problems with mouths, no bad
mouths, a few with dropped incisors. It was surprising, however, to see a few of
the really lovely exhibits with extremely dirty teeth.
Overall size, bone and substance were good. Coats were lovely; double-coated,
squeaky clean and well trimmed with only a few out of coat. I think toplines
have improved in recent years. In the early 1990's there were a number of dogs
with steep croup's which detracted from the overall outline. A number of tails
reached well below the hock. This can tend to give the dog a rather unbalanced
look. There were very few gay tails. Whilst not evident at this show, a number
of tails with a curled tip have cropped up in the ring recently. Also sneaking
in, are ears that are almost hound-like in appearance. This too can alter the
classic golden look. Whilst ears do not affect a dog's function the standard
calls for a moderate size ear that ideally should reach only to the corner of
the eye.
Forelegs were pretty straight with feet generally round and catlike. A few were
found to be pinning in both standing and on the move. Forechests, length of neck
and layback varied. Layback and length of neck tend to be pretty much
inter-related. Width between the forelegs should be at least that of a man's
hand. Length of upper arm is a problem in many breeds. This does not necessarily
affect the movement fore and aft but it will certainly affect the reach in
front. Hindquarters were well angulated. A few were slightly cow-hocked and
quite a number of dogs were not in hard working condition. Goldens should appear
workmanlike and be well up on their toes. Athletic movement is achieved by a
combination of confirmation, musculature, co-ordination, conditioning and
training. For several years there has been a tendency for some of our Goldens to
be a little short in leg, often with an exaggerated depth of chest. It is
written that the most athletic animal is one with the most stable centre of
gravity. Legs that are too short and chests that are too heavy are two factors
that affect this centre of gravity.
Body length also varied. The length of back should be short with the overall
length of the dog coming from good balanced forequarter and hindquarter
angulation. As an exercise, I measured the withers to elbow, elbow to ground and
back length on photographs of a few of the all time greats, Ch Camrose Cabus
Christopher, Ch Kyvalley Kyva and his son Ch Wildheart Wenan UD and his son Ch
Queenlee Debonair AOC. On each of the dogs all three measurements were found to
be equal. (This will not necessarily the case with bitches, however, where
allowance is made for them to be slightly longer. The distance between withers
to elbow and elbow to ground though should still be the same.)
Over the years, NSW dogs have performed well at The Sydney Royal. The most
famous achievement of course, was when Ch Balandra Delta Darius UD took out the
honour of Best Exhibit In Show. When looking at results of a few other major
shows around the world, such as Crufts (UK), Westminster (USA) and The Melbourne
Royal, it can be seen that the number of Best Exhibit In Groups awarded to
Goldens is disproportionate to the number of entries. Only two Goldens have won
Best In Group at Melbourne Royal. In England, where breed popularity is
enormous, only two Goldens have ever won the Group at Crufts (Sh Ch Gainspa
Florette of Shiremoor(1965) and Ch Brensham Audacity(1979)) and at Westminster
only one Golden (Ch Cragmont's Hi Lo(1968)) has achieved this feat. If there is
any area to be improved in the breed as a whole, I would say it would be to be
able to produce Goldens with a presence, or sense of self, to enable them to
pull ahead of all other Best of Breed winners in the Gundog Group, and beyond.
I would like to conclude with a few general points that may be of assistance to
the new exhibitors starting off on this amazing hobby.
· The perfect dog hasn't been born yet.
· In this country a judge is expected to judge approximately 40 dogs per hour.
This means that the exhibitor has less than two minutes to get his dog to make a
big impression.
· The outfit worn should compliment, but not overpower the dog. If the exhibitor
is dressed well he is not only complimenting the dog but he is giving the dog
world the respect it deserves.
· The time and effort put into grooming is obvious when judging.
· If a dog is not in hard working condition it can be easily picked up by a
judge's examination.
· Effort should be put into training so that, when handling, the timing is such
that the dog is looking its absolute best until the exact moment the judge has
made his final decision.
· The experienced handlers know that when they are disappointed, someone else is
very happy.
· Lastly, it must be remembered always that a judge's opinion on the day is just
that-an opinion.
Once again, thank you all for the privilege of judging our beloved breed. To be
given a day to spend going over approximately 150 beautiful Golden Retrievers, I
thought that I must have died and gone to heaven.
God Bless you all.
Kindest regards
Marilynn Morphet (Qld)
