Breed Judge - Robyn Brown

I really enjoyed my day, the atmosphere was friendly and the rain stayed away. I appreciated the time taken to do the calligraphy on the Judges sign. The trophies looked good and were well received. I had some excellent dogs to judge, and appreciate the way exhibitors took my decisions, it does come down to "on the day".

The baby classes contained mixed types, the winners really took my eye, both neat packages showing lots of promise.

The minor puppy classes I thought were very strong, especially the bitch class, three lovely girls.

Puppy class was interesting as the types were different to each other. Correct angulation and toplines were the main things lacking.

I enjoyed the Junior classes, both full of quality, a pleasure to judge.

Intermediate classes were another of differing styles. Conformation and movement varied also.

In the Aust Bred classes my first places were well won, both a picture, with the depth of quality the placings also well earned.

Open classes were a joy, places could easily be reversed in both sexes on any given day. Conformation, movement, heads, coats excelled and I was pleased to find my BIS winner from the bitch class. Well deserved.

Property Judge – Rose Easton

I would like to thank the Club for the invitation to judge the Golden Retriever Club of NSW Inc Property Classes.
My headed dog class had some lovely heads in it with great potential in the younger dogs. My winner was not overdone in any way, balanced head with soft kind expression.
Coated Class mainly had young stock in it and it was difficult to asses the final type of coat they would end up with. My winner had all the necessary qualities required.
Gaited Class was won by a sound smooth level moving girl who carried her self well on the move, and was full of animation.
Interstate Sweeps was also won by the same bitch.
Lady Handlers all handled well and it was a tough decision for the eventual winner. Well done Jo-anne Morris, handling I believe a dog not shown by her before.
Junior Handlers all did a creditable job. My winner in the younger age group Samantha Lynch did an outstanding job with a dog I believe she has not handled previously. She shows great potential for the future.
Keep up the good work.

Obedience JudgeGrahame Brown

As an Obedience Judge, it is a pleasure to judge at a Specialist  Show, for in most cases one has the rare opportunity to judge all three Classes, and hence the chance to compare dogs at each level of competition.

It is even more of a pleasure to judge at the Golden Retriever Show, to witness the enthusiasm and willingness to work shown by the breed that I have enjoyed owning for a number of years.

The coolness in the air, the slight breeze and the moisture underfoot seemed to present one of the best situations, which showed in the dogs’ work.

Congratulations to those who Qualified, and commiserations to those who did not, but I know that better fortunes will come in the future.

Gundog Working Tests Judge -  Fred Hession

I had the privilege to judge the Working Test for Gundogs on Sunday 6th May2001, conducted by the Golden Retriever Club of NSW Inc.

I was disappointed with the entry as Golden Retrievers are a working breed and more owners should train their dogs and compete in this basic exercise.  The test is serious but it can be quite enjoyable.

The three competitors in the Open exercise need further training, keeping in mind they are just a step away from competing in Non Slip Retrieving Trials.  The dogs completed the three heeling exercises efficiently but the retrieving was below the standard required.  The dogs did not mark the bird and did not take commands given by their handlers.  I believe these dogs compete in UD Obedience and they should therefore be able to be controlled in the Field.

The two dogs competing in the Novice Section of the working Test acquitted themselves very well, especially dog # 94.  This dog completed the three heeling exercises with high marks and correctly marked the bird.  The handler sent the dog, the dog went straight to the bird and picked it up.  He then turned to his handler, paused – showing the bird as if saying “I’ve got the bird”.  He then returned to his handler, head held high carrying the bird in a proud fashion.  The hand over of the bird was good and it was a first class retrieve.

My second dog started the Test with a higher score in the first heeling exercise than I scored my first dog.  I sensed I had a competition on my hands, but as the exercise progressed the performance dropped off.  The retrieving exercise let this dog down, but she was still able to obtain a qualifying score.

In finishing; the retrieve by my first dog # 94 was that of a typical Golden Retriever – Proud, Effortless, Correct Bird Carriage and Movement.
